Decluttering

In the interests of decluttering (and also partly inspired by this post of Ginger's) Hubby and I have decided to rewatch all our videos and DVDs and assess them as to whether we should keep them. I typed up our criteria for assessing to help us and thought I would share them:

Criteria for assessing videos/DVDs

Does it:
• contain profane language;
• condone sinful practice (e.g. homosexuality, adultery etc);
• portray sin as not having any consequences;
• display more detail of things than is acceptable (e.g. sex, drug taking etc.)?

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like”.


“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”


I'd be interested to hear what criteria others use to assess what they watch.

Hi Susan!!I wanted to tell you that I`m so glad you used my idea for the broad beans a few weeks ago!!I tried to leave a comment then,but for some reason could not.I`m so glad everything worked out for you!!
AS far as video watching,this is an area that I struggle with greatly.Hubby loves movies,but since he is not a christian his standards are very different from mine,and Gods:(God knows that my desire is to serve Him and raise children that want to serve Him as well,so I know He will help in this area of our lives:)Hope your having a blessed Lord`s Day:)

I use certain Bible versed when I determine if I should watch something.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall NOT inherit the kingdom of God. Ours is pretty much the same.

Besure to watch for things that will cause doubt in Christ. I rented a children's movie and there was a part that could make one doubt that hell exist.

The movie producers like to sneak stuff like that in there.

I've battled with this internally for sometime.
I love Sex and the City, Harry Potter, Charmed...the list goes on and on.
But I'm 25 years old, I know the difference between fact and fiction. I know right from wrong.
For some, it bothers them to have these sorts of things in their life. I guess I feel that if it doesn't run my life or my values don't start to change. It's okay.
I do not watch things with brutal violence however. THAT bothers me.
To each their own.

I'm with the commentator above who doesn't like violence - to me this, along with cruelty, can make a film unwatchable.

Apart from this, for me it's how the subject matter is handled more than the subject matter itself.

For example, sometimes people are shown doing shameless things but then have to reap the consequences. I think this is true to life. People do bad things, but do they ever really get away with it?

Recently I stopped watching Desperate Housewives because I came to the conclusion that it was pure sensationalism for the sake of it. I can't say I've missed it.

To be fair to Sex and the City there were some important messages in there. For example, Miranda deciding to have her baby rather than having an abortion and then becoming more womanly and less career obsessed as a result. I did not like the way that all modern women are shown as promiscuous though. (Which isn't even true.)

Harry Potter contains some good moral lessons about loyalty, self-sacrifice and the fact that love is more powerful than the strongest magic. Parents should explain to their children about the difference between fantasy magic and the occult.

Actually surely parents should always discuss what their children are watching with them rather than leave them to make their own minds ups and be influenced by the media?

Hope I didn't run on too much there. This is just my opinion. Keep us posted about your video clear-out!

I agree that *how* something is portrayed is very important but the reason for it can be important too so in the example of violence, I might accept something like Schindler's List because it is showing real life and the motivation it to show how bad it was whereas I might reject soemthing with lesser voilence because it is gratuitous and unecessary.

Your criteria are similar to ours.

Language, scary scenes, violence, sexual misconduct (homosexuality, unmarried sex, any sex scenes at all even if people are married in the movie), references to things we should not glorify in a positive light (drugs, sex, sins in general), and so on.

Needless to say, our DVD collection thinned in a huge way once we were convicted of this and, honestly, that's fine with us.
